2010 - The Healing Quilt

Image
Jennifer and I started this quilt in early 2010.  We went up to her home in Wallsburg and cut and sewed all afternoon and into the evening.  We slept there and got up and worked a few more hours.  We didn't get back to this quilt for a while because Jen was diagnosed with breast cancer and spent her time recovering from surgeries and having chemo treatments.  We eventually finished the quilt in 2012 and also the companion quilt.   The pattern is from Quilt Soup Pattern Co. and is called Two-fers.  The star quilt was our first project.  Five-point stars can be a bit tricky but the pattern had good templates.  It is called Star of the West.  We sewed the four patch blocks together and then machine appliqued the round star onto them.  We cut out the back that gave us a four patch circle that was made into the second quilt Surprise Quilt. We used fabrics from our stashes.  When they were finally complete, Jennifer was in remission ...

2022 - Bountiful Harvest

Image
Love this little autumn quilt!  It is made from Riley Blake's fabric line: Bountiful Harvest with a gray background.  The pattern is from the Country Seat Quilts book by Julie Hendricksen and Vickie Gerike called Harvest Pumpkins.  I saw this quilt last fall at Pine Needles Quilt Shop and loved it.  Their choice of fabrics was perfect.   I bought a layer cake fabric pack for Stacie for her birthday and the book.  Then, I wanted to make it as well and ordered my own fabric.  It was fairly straight forward.  I redesigned the stars to be faster and easier to make and it was finished in no time.  I love it! quilted by Karen Morgan

2019 to 2022 Primary Children's Hospital Quilts

Image
Todd Larsen was called to be the branch president of the Primary Children's Hospital branch and he along with Brenda in 2019 and do a fabulous job.  Brenda keeps a closet of donations of blankets, art kits, toys and such to give to families who need a little lift. They put things out on a table so that anyone can take what they need.   They are so good to let me know where they go and so happy when I bring a quilt over. I have given 6 or 7 quilts to Brenda to use at the hospital and she always keeps them to give to "special children".   2022 Minky backing 2022 2019 2019 2019

2020 Glenn's Birthday quilt

Image
When I saw this llama pattern, I was hooked and had to make it.  There is quite the llama silliness in our family and Glenn is the one who usually promotes it.  This was an Elizabeth Hartman pattern, Lloyd and Lola.  I had a struggle getting the colors on the stripes right.  The hanging lanterns looked problematic but once started, they weren't that bad.  It is a cute pattern and fun to give.  I put a very soft black minky on the back.  It is a great cuddle quilt.  Anyone can tell it's a tennis racquet! Ah, Star Wars!  Thanks Matt! You only turn 40 once.

2006 - Jack and Rosemary's quilt for their mission

Image
Jack and Rosemary Wixom were called to be the mission president couple presiding over the Washington, D.C. South Mission in 2006.  I made this quilt in the colors that Rosemary loves and gave it to them with permanent pens with the intention that they would have each missionary sign the quilt before they left for home.  A few years after they arrived home, I was able to take a picture of the back that was signed by all of those missionaries.  Some made quite the statement with their signatures!  Rosemary has told me that it is one of her greatest treasures.

Quilt Group in the Neighborhood

Image
We were at stake Lagoon Day and I was chatting with Ann Hronek and she suggested that we start a quilt group.  I was in!  That sounded fun and I was looking for a reason to quilt more.   I had quilt group at my house the first time.  I had started this bear paw quilt and I put it on frames and everyone helped with the hand quilting.  You can tell from the photo that my skills weren't very advanced at the time. I finished it up, bound it and was happy with it but didn't really use it, I just looked at it.  The first time I washed it, the red blocks bled into the white and it was pretty ruined.  Years later, I found Synthropol that would take out the bleed and used that to fix it.
